Sports for Nature

Sports for Nature is a joint initiative of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, International Olympic Committee, United Nations Environment Programme, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy. Launched in 2022, it aims to deliver transformative action for nature across sports, by 2030 and beyond, enabling sports to champion nature and contribute to its protection and restoration.

Challenge

Urgent action is needed across all sectors of society, including the sports community, to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of the natural world that supports our health, well-being, and access to clean air, fresh water, and food. As a positive force for change, sports can play a powerful role in protecting and restoring nature. By taking action, sports organisations contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation, not only in the places where they play, but also by inspiring millions around the world to care for the planet.

Action

Sports For Nature provides a game plan for sports — at all levels — to accelerate and inspire others to take action for nature. It advances the role of sports in protecting and restoring nature by ensuring knowledge sharing and implementation of best practices. It provides tools to help sports organizations better understand and enhance their positive impact on nature. Particularly, the nature mapping tool is designed to guide sports toward meaningful contributions to conservation.
