2018 - Present

Challenge

Our ocean faces unprecedented threats: declining biodiversity, rampant illegal fishing, and mounting industrial pressures—all exacerbated by climate change. Inadequate baseline data and “paper” MPAs hinder effective management. As governments commit to protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030 and new high seas treaties emerge, robust, transparent monitoring is urgently needed to safeguard marine resources for future generations.

Action

Dona Bertarelli has co-founded Marine Manager with Global Fishing Watch in 2018 to create a cutting-edge, AI-powered portal visualizing human and environmental activity over 10 million km² of ocean ecosystems. It empowers marine management teams to support the sustainable design and implementation of highly and fully protected MPAs. The second phase—launched in 2025—will scale up the platform to advance the 30×30 goal. We are supporting over 10 countries in regions such as Eastern Tropical Pacific and expanding into new regions along the South American Pacific coast, Brazil, and parts of the Mediterranean. Enhanced AI and satellite data capabilities will further support the empowerment of marine managers with real-time insights for effective MPA design and enforcement.
