BACKING COMMUNITY-LED MANGROVE RESTORATION FOR FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

Mangroves for our Future

2024 - Present

Challenge

The community of Sankandi and its mangroves face multiple environmental challenges, including saline intrusion, soil degradation, and water scarcity, which have severely impacted agriculture and horticulture, currently the community’s main income sources. The degradation comes primarily from changes in the river upstream, but the resulting environmental conditions make natural regeneration of the mangroves very challenging and the community requested support to scale previous efforts.

Action

Nnaa Samaa Mankolou (or Mangroves for Our Future) in Gambia, focuses on restoring healthy mangrove and riverine ecosystems that the community’s livelihoods and local biodiversity need. Our support provides the community time to research the conditions, start mangrove restoration and set up additional livelihoods, as it becomes a Plan Vivo accredited carbon credit project. The combinations are designed to generate sustainable revenue for the community through collaborations between Sankandi Youth Development Association (SYDA), ENU, ACES, and The University of The Gambia.
