IUCN

IUCN is the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it because IUCN is a unique union for nature. Its more than 1,400 Union Members include over 50% of all national governments and a huge number of civil society organisations, large and small. It harnesses the experience, resources and reach of both its Union Members and its more than 17,000 experts in science, law and more, to provide the science, knowledge, and tools that enable human progress, economic development and nature conservation to take place together.

DEEP SEA CAPACITY SUPPORT

2022 - Present

Challenge

Deep-sea ecosystems (below 200 meters) are vital to the health of our planet. They regulate carbon storage, support global nutrient cycles, and provide habitat for countless species, many of which remain undiscovered. Despite their importance, these ecosystems are among the least studied on Earth, with major gaps in our scientific understanding. This uncertainty makes it impossible to reliably assess the risks of deep seabed mining, an exploitative industry that threatens to cause irreversible damage to these fragile environments. As the International Seabed Authority (ISA) considers regulations, there is growing concern that rushed, uninformed decisions will open the door to large-scale exploitation before the environmental impact is clear.

Action

With IUCN and its experts, we are supporting policy advocacy, championing a precautionary, science-based approach anchored in the Precautionary Principles for the Deep sea at the ISA, and across other relevant forums. Our work calls for comprehensive baseline studies and transparent, accountable regulations through active stakeholder engagement, and targeted awareness campaigns aimed at technical audiences, ensuring any decisions related to deep-ocean mining are informed in the long-term.
