Sow My Dreams

The Sow My Dream pilot projects were created to support young people on the front line of climate change in creating sustainable and social enterprises.

I believe it’s possible for youth to create ‘green livelihoods’, to generate income which is in harmony with nature and resilient to climate change.

The changing climate negatively impacts the economies of the world’s poorest coastal countries, making it more difficult for young people to find work. 25% of the world’s working age population are young people, and 1 in 7 young people are looking for work.

Working at the intersection between opportunities for youth and climate change, Sow My Dream pilot projects were started in the Dominican Republic and the Exumas, Bahamas.

In the Dominican Republic, Plan International worked with Dona Bertarelli and her team to develop an approach which combined highly practical training about the environment, and entrepreneurial skills, for young people who had had little access to education previously. The aim was to give them the confidence, technical skills and start-up hardware to create social enterprises themselves.

It became clear that learning out of the classroom was key to showing young people the potential of their ideas, and in the Exumas, Bahamas, working with the Exuma Foundation, the Sow My Dream project saw the creation of a productive farm on the school grounds of L.N. Coakley High School. The farm used climate smart tools and techniques, to be in harmony with nature and found clients for its produce in nearby hotels.
